Is chiropractic care during pregnancy safe?

Chiropractic care is just one of the many safe and effective treatments that can help prepare the mother’s body for the experience of pregnancy and childbirth. There are specialized adjustment methods designed to accommodate pregnancy and lessen the issues that come with it. Many of the women that choose to receive chiropractic care during their pregnancy report that it helped them use little to no pain medications throughout their delivery.

Why should I have chiropractic care during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, there are many physiological and hormonal changes that arise in preparation for creating the environment for the developing baby. These changes, while important for accommodating for the baby, can result in a misaligned spine or joints.

Establishing pelvic balance and alignment is another reason to seek chiropractic care during pregnancy. During pregnancy, a woman’s body must undergo a number of different changes to accommodate the growing baby. Due to the weight that is gained, a mother’s center of gravity moves from its natural position, shifting to the front of her pelvis. This can add stress and discomfort to the lower back and various joints in the pelvis. Keeping the spine aligned helps the entire body work more effectively.

What are the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy?

  • Maintaining a healthier pregnancy

  • Controlling symptoms of nausea

  • Potentially decrease the time of labor and delivery

  • Relieving back, neck or joint pain

With a balanced pelvis, babies have a greater chance of moving into the correct position for birth. We suggest that our pregnant moms visit the chiropractor at least once in the Third Trimester between 28 – 34 weeks. Patients with nausea and vomiting, neck pain, back pain or joint pain should be seen by the chiropractor after being assessed by one of the medical providers when necessary.
